Women's Movement

Women's Movement

Gandhi Manav Kalyan Society is deeply concerned about the violation of women rights. Women in this society suffer in many fronts and the existence of inequality has deposed the women more into vulnerable situation. In this male-dominated society women have hardly any rights to exercise. They have no opportunities to live in equal status with men. The women mostly take the dual burden of managing the family and as well as manage the livelihood for all. Besides all domestic chores, they substantially contribute to agriculture and engage with other high labour-intensive works. This is common to all women of the region. In many cases it has been seen that they don’t know how to raise their voices. Part of the reason may be as because of low literacy rate and lack of awareness about their rights.

Every year organizes series of rallies and events on certain specific issues with an aim to sensitize the rights of the women. The women enthusiastically participate in rallies and raise their voices against the problems in which they suffer most. Their active participation in formation of women groups has led to a mass movement in the region that has brought a consensus in the society.

GMKS since its inception has been working to involve women in all development activities of the organization and in local Panchayati Raj Institutions which are implementing various developmental schemes. GMKS believes that women’s participation in development addressing larger needs of women cannot be assured without male sensitization.

Every year, GMKS organizes International Women's Day. This day is celebrated with a view to give a platform to these tribal women to raise their voices for their own rights and share experiences. Around 2000 women participate in the programme.
